Abstract:

The paper addresses the issues associated with nuclear legacy in general and more specifically in the Arctic. The paper discusses practical efforts on the elimination nuclear legacy facilities carried out under the federal target program Nuclear and Radiation Safety in 2008 and until 2015. Three distinct areas were considered in this respect, namely: a set of measures on infrastructure development and safety improvement at the sites located in the coastal area; efforts implemented under the program for certain operating organizations providing necessary support for activities carried out directly in the Arctic; reducing the risks associated with nuclear legacy facilities located in the continental part of Russia. The paper presents a comprehensive approach aiming to ensure radiation safety in the Arctic being a rare example of ecological recovery efforts.
