Areas of scientific activity: ideas about anthropogenic biogeography, paradigm shifts in modern geography theory and in its relations with practice — in territorial nature conservation, rehabilitation of disturbed lands, and concept oration of ecosystem services as a new economic mechanism for environmental protection are developed.
Author and co-author of fundamental generalizations on the theory of dynamics and productivity of zonal landscapes and the assessment of their biosphere functions, the leader of the scientific school on modern biogeography of Russia at the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
